We are pleased to convey that over 150 HONOR THEIR LIGHT flags to honor today’s nurses have been given to nurses who are providing care at cancer treatment centers, surgical units, ERs, pediatric & NICUs, patient care units, as well as to retired nurses and nursing students. Their appreciation for recognizing them and their light has been inspiring to our mission.

FEBRUARY 2025 - Middlesex Community College, Nursing Program Pinning Ceremony, Class of 2025

Flags for Nurses Project attended the beautiful Pinning Ceremony for MCC’s Nursing class of 2025. The ceremony was a testament that MCC provides a holistic environment and outstanding education to their students. Stories graciously shared during the ceremony were compelling and captured the standing-room only attendees who were extremely proud.

We had the pleasure of meeting all of the students and thanked them for their commitment to caring for others and gave them a flag to remind them of the light they will bring to patients and loved ones as well as the importance of taking care of that light with self-care. Congratulations class of 2025!!

JANUARY 2025 - Middlesex Community College, Nursing Program Simulation Lab

We were honored and appreciative to MCC’s Senior Director of Nurse Education, Susan Lavalle MS, RN, CNE for providing our team a tour of the fabulous new Nursing Simulation lab at the college’s new Health Education and Laboratory Technology Hub located on Middle Street, downtown Lowell. MCC’s Nursing Program simulation lab is a critical learning tool being provided to nursing students. It was an amazing experience to see the beautiful historic building housing the newest simulation labs imaginable. The labs include manikins, high-fidelity simulators, Sim Pad Plus, hospital equipment for sim bays, complete nurses’ command stations, and nursing skills laboratory stations. The passion and leadership for nursing students is highly evident while ensuring that the program graduates some of the best nurses for our community.

The Flags for Nurses Project honors and celebrates all nurses, at all degree levels, and models how society should be acknowledging this recognition as well. We are given the opportunity to convey a very important message as the upcoming nurses begin their paths; to be mindful of their LIGHT with self-care and work-life balance; to find a balance and resources that nourish them and their person as a whole. We hope when they look at the flag’s image it will remind them to take these steps.

Spring 2024 Middlesex Community College, Nursing Program Pinning Ceremony, Class of 2024

We were honored to be invited to MCC’s Nursing Program Pinning Ceremony to HONOR the graduating nurses as they embarked on their path to providing care and Light to patients everywhere. Their stories were commendable, inspiring and ensuring that they are able and very ready to step into the world of nursing. They will bring calm and reassurance to patients everywhere they go. We were given an amazing opportunity to remind them all of the importance to to take care of their LIGHT with self-care.  Find a balance and resources that nourish them and their person as a whole. We hope that when they look at the image it reminds them of their LIGHT and the importance of prioritizing their own care. We embrace with love and gratitude, the LIGHT they will be providing.

December 2023 Inside Lowell - Inside Story “Flag’s for Nurses Project” Launches in Lowell Natives Honor

Our first public opportunity to share our new non-profit and our mission. We are grateful to Teddy Panos and his team for sharing their platform to help spread the LIGHT and inform folks of our mission of ensuring that the heroic efforts of nurses are never forgotten. Our Mission began with a receiving a copyright for the flag’s design, titled “Melissa”. The flag’s design is reflective of three elements.  First, the lamp. Florence Nightingale is credited as the founder of the modern day nursing practice and is synonymous with the oil lamp. She often cared for the sick and injured during the nighttime hours, carrying a lamp with her so she could see. Second, the heart reflects compassion, empathy, love and care nurses provide. Third, the color blue is associated with calmness, the sky and Melissa’s beautiful blue eyes.
